What is Groover?

Although most advertisement-supported programs are equally as obnoxious and unreliable, some of them are more complex than others. Groover is that kind of an advertisement-supported program, and this is because it can replace dnsapi.dll, a dynamic link library file that helps programs to function. Unfortunately, if this file is replaced, it will be difficult to eliminate adware from your operating system. Although uninstalling this program is an easy and straightforward process, replacing the corrupted file with the original Windows file can be a challenge, especially if you are not experienced. How does Groover work?

As mentioned previously, Groover is an advertisement-supported program, and it was created to inject ads. According to Anti-Spyware-101.com adware analysts, this suspicious adware can inject ads into any website, but it is most likely that it will inject files into online shopping sites, and the ads shown will promote shopping deals and discounts. These ads could show up with different tags, indicating that they belong to Groover, LaSuperba, or some other advertising network. We do not recommend clicking on these ads because they could represent unreliable parties. If you are not cautious, you could be tricked into visiting corrupted sites, share your personal information with unknown parties, or even download malware. Although this would happen only in the worst case scenario, we have to consider it because there is no official information about this advertisement-supported program.

While researching Groover, we found that Jabuticaba, Daugava, and Shopperz are just as complicated. These advertisement-supported programs could hijack system files to enable advertising, and this kind of activity is considered malicious. If you find any of these programs on your operating system, you must remove them as well. Hopefully, the same steps can be used to eliminate all of these threats. Of course, it is very unlikely that several different versions of the same infection would enter your operating system. Unfortunately, it is likely that third-party malicious programs will enter your operating system along with the suspicious Groover. Since this program does not have an official installer, it is not surprising that it travels packaged with malicious programs. Depending on the distributor, this adware could travel along with hijackers, Trojans, keyloggers, and other dangerous, malicious computer threats.

How to remove Groover

As you now know, the removal of Groover can be very complicated. If you do not find an uninstaller via the Control Panel, it is most likely that you will need to replace the infected files. Delete Groover

Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows Vista, and Windows 7:

1. Launch RUN (simultaneously tap Win+R).
2. Enter Control Panel and click OK.
3. Under Programs select Uninstall a program.
4. Right-click and Uninstall the undesirable program.

Windows XP:

1. Click Start on the Taskbar and open Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add or Remove programs.
3. Select and Remove the undesirable program.

Replace the infected dnsapi.dll

N.B. You will have to use two different windows to transfer files.

Step 1

1. Tap Win+R to access Windows Explorer.
2. Enter C:\Windows\SysWOW64.
3. Tap Win+R to access Windows Explorer in a different window.
4. Enter C:\Windows\winsxs.
5. Enter dnsapi.dll into the search box at the top.
6. Find the newest version of the file in the C:\Windows\winsxs\wow64[…] directory.
7. Drag this file to C:\Windows\SysWOW64 in the other window and replace the infected file.

Step 2

1. Tap Win+R to access Windows Explorer.
2. Enter C:\Windows\System32.
3. Tap Win+R to access Windows Explorer in a different window.
4. Enter C:\Windows\winsxs.
5. Enter dnsapi.dll into the search box at the top.
6. Find the newest version of the file in the C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64[…] directory.
7. Drag this file to C:\Windows\System32 in the other window and replace the infected file.
