The Affirmativo

What is The Affirmativo?

The Affirmativo is thought to be a potentially unwanted program (PUP). It means the application’s reliability could be in question and it might work in an undesirable manner, for which some of you might want to get rid of it. We should mention that at the moment it works only on Google Chrome as there are no reports about versions compatible with other browsers. If the application’s removal is why you are here, we encourage you to slide below this report and use the available deletion instructions. However, if before eliminating the PUP you would like to get more information about it, we invite you to read our article first. While doing so, users can find out where The Affirmativo comes from and most importantly how it can affect one’s browsing habits.

Where does The Affirmativo come from?

The extension did have a homepage from which some of its users may have downloaded it. At some point, you could add it to your browser through the Chrome Web Store page too, but according to our researchers at Anti-spyware-101.com the application was most likely removed from this site since at the moment of writing you cannot find it there. The fact The Affirmativo does not have an official web page anymore and could have been removed from the Google Chrome Web Store page no doubt raises a suspicion. It also makes us wonder how else the extension might be distributed if not through the two mentioned websites.  Adware, browser hijackers, and PUPs quite often travel with bundled installation files and doubtful pop-up ads, so the application in question could be distributed in such ways as well; which would mean you may receive it by downloading untrustworthy software or clicking questionable pop-ups.

How does The Affirmativo work?

If you believe the application’s creators, the add-on should hide your browsing records from Internet service providers or ISPs in short. At least that is how The Affirmativo was described in the Chrome Web Store page at the time it was still available there. To find out the purpose of it, our researchers tested the PUP themselves. Once it was installed, we noticed the search queries we submitted on the Google Chrome were redirected to unknown web pages until we received Yahoo search results. Further examination revealed the provided results were filtered before displaying them to remove any results containing the word “Trump.” As a consequence, some of the web pages that you would normally be able to see were left out. We are not sure how such a tool is supposed to protect your privacy or help you browse since such behavior might limit the user from going to specific web pages. If you are not sure whether The Affirmativo is useful too, it might best not to take any chances and simply erase it.

How to eliminate The Affirmativo?

The Affirmativo installs itself by placing a couple of folders in the %USERPROFILE% and %LOCALAPPDATA% directories and possibly by modifying specific files belonging to the user’s browser. The exact paths and files' titles will be provided in the instructions located at the end of this paragraph, so if you decide you want to erase the PUP manually, it would be advisable to have a look at them. For users who prefer automatic features, they can install a legitimate antimalware tool and do a system scan. Then the antimalware tool would detect the unwanted extension, and the user could get rid of it along with other potential threats with a single mouse click.
