Air Media Player

What is Air Media Player?

Air Media Player is a new application that offers you video watching features; however, after careful and deep testing, our malware specialists at anti-spyware-101.com say that this software is far from functioning and reliable either. In fact, we have concluded that this is a potentially unwanted program (PUP) that might pose a potential threat to your system even if not directly. Unfortunately, this PUP may bring a few unwanted surprises on board. We have found that this questionable application could be used to spread adware programs and other useless PUPs. Since this software does not even seem to work at all as promised, we believe that you should not hesitate to remove Air Media Player from your system along with all other related and unrelated threat sources as well. If you do not want to be exposed to questionable third-party content and let more infections onto your PC or worse, you should not leave even potentially risky applications on your computer. Where does Air Media Player come from?

The main distribution method of this annoying PUP is unfortunately rather questionable. You may download it when you are warned by a pop-up window that "Please install Media Player Pro to continue." This window pops up while you are browsing the web so you may actually think that it is for real and you surely need to install another media player to view certain content. However, even if you lack the right plugin or player to see something, you should always visit official websites and download updates or software from those. For example, if you are prompted that you need the latest Adobe Flash Player to see a video, you should not use the link or button provided by the website you are viewing or the pop-up that offers this. As a matter of fact, this is how a lot of users infect their system unknowingly. Because once you install such a tool, you could have a bundle of malware threats on board, too, not to mention that the target application may not work at all.

It quite possible that your system is infected with adware if such a pop-up can show up on your screen. If you have such an infection on your PC, you can never be safe any time you go online. Another possibility is that you end up running a web search through a browser hijacker and the displayed search results page contains unsafe links or ads that you click on and drop this PUP or more onto your system. There is yet another option for you to be introduced to questionable third-party content and that is to visit suspicious websites associated with file sharing, gaming, dating, and porn. These pages are infamous for hosting a lot of annoying and flashy advertisements that you should keep away from if you want to protect your system. Since this PUP can come with other PUPs and adware programs on board, we suggest that you run a reliable malware scanner on your system after you delete Air Media Player.

In all fairness, we also need to mention the official websites, xetoware.com/air-media-player.html and airmediaplayer.com, where you can also download this PUP knowingly if you happen to find these sites. These pages claim that this software is "stunningly beautiful" but we beg to differ; this media player is more than basic to us. Strangely enough, you cannot download the installer directly from these pages. If you click the "Get Air Media Player" button on the former page, you get redirected to the latter. If you click on the download button on the latter site, you are taken to a download page where you need to click again. Then, you get redirected to a download.cnet.com page, where you can finally get your software. This is a bit painstaking and suspicious, too.

How does Air Media Player work?

Well, to be quite frank, it seems that this PUP does not work at all. At least, during testing we could not get it to play any major video file types, including .avi, .mkv, and .mp4. This makes this application totally useless. However, during installation we discovered that it changes your proxy settings, which could be used to redirect you to questionable websites, for example. In any case, this is not a good sign definitely; rather suspicious to say the least. Another bad thing about this program is that it can install other PUPs and adware programs as well. As a matter of fact, you should not keep this application on your system one minute longer because you can never know what it might surprise you with next. What if it redirects you to malicious websites where one click could drop more serious threats onto your computer or you could also be scammed if unlucky? All in all, we believe that you should remove Air Media Player from your system if you want to make sure that you are using a clean PC.
