OnlineGuard

What is OnlineGuard?

OnlineGuard is a fake anti-virus program which should never be trusted, because its only goal is to deceive the unsuspecting user into purchasing the full version of the program. This is the major goal of all rogue programs, and, if you ever come across any suspect system scanners, you should find out whether the program is reliable or not. The truth is that OnlineGuard is no longer active, but it is known to malware researchers, and, if you had a reputable and powerful anti-malware program, the infection would be removed from the computer with ease.

How does OnlineGuard work?

First of all, the OnlineGuard program is associated with Spy-Shredder, AntiSpyKit, and some other similar fake security programs. Similarly to OnlineGuard, Spy-Shredder was active in 2007 and was compatible with rather old operating systems, including Windows 2000, Windows 95, Windows 98, and the older versions available at that time.

Like other rogue anti-virus programs, OnlineGuard creates many malicious registry entries that allow the program to start running at system startup. Once the infection gets on the computer, it displays a fake system scanner which eventually shows a list of fake detections, including Trojan horses, rootkits, and other malicious programs. Such scan results are supposed to prompt the user to invest in the program, which would be an absolute waste of money. Moreover, some fake pop-up notifications can be displayed to strengthen the deception.

Luckily, OnlineGuard is no longer circulating on the Internet, but you should note that there are dozens of very similar malicious programs that seek to obtain users’ money by deception. You should be alert to the possibility of encountering one in the future, especially if you like browsing unreliable websites, such as freeware distribution websites and adult-themed websites.

How to remove OnlineGuard?

Like any other piece of software, the OnlineGuard malware can be removed manually. All that you would need is a lot of knowledge and skills because every piece of the program would have to be deleted in order to prevent the renewal of the program. Ideally, OnlineGuard, or any other counterfeit security program, should be removed using a reputable malware and spyware program. Our team at Anti-Spyware-101.com recommends using SpyHunter, which can easily remove OnlineGuard and safeguard the system against Trojan horses, adware programs, browser hijackers, rogue anti-virus programs, rootkits, ransomware threats, and many other dangerous programs.
