What is Antivirus Security 2013?

Several days ago we reported that a new rogue anti-virus program has been attributed to the Rogue.WinWebSec family. This time we want to report that one more threat called Antivirus Security 2013 has been detected. Those of you who have never encountered a fake anti-virus program should know that such programs as Antivirus Security 2013 are created to deceive computer users into thinking that their computers are infected; hence the user is expected to purchase or activate the full version of the program. Unfortunately, the anti-virus program in question cannot do anything related to the security of computers.

How does Antivirus Security 2013 deceive people?

Like the majority of fake AVs, Antivirus Security 2013 gets to the computer via insecure websites. For example, a hacked website can display a legitimate-looking security warning which, if clicked on, causes the download of the rogue security tool. Once it is installed in the folder %Application Data% or %ProgramData%, which depends on whether you use Windows XP or Windows Vista/7/8 respectively, different security alerts are generated:

The treacherous program can also disable some computer programs. You may be constrained from accessing Task Manager and Registry Editor, not to mention the possibility that Antivirus 2013 will disable your access to the Internet.  If you cannot load any website, the following notification should be present on your Internet Explorer:

Your security setting level puts your computer at risk!
Activate “Antivirus Security 2013″, and enable safe web surfing (recommended).

As you can see, the rogue program, just like Live Security Platinum or Disk Antivirus Professional, employs different scare tactics to make you think that you have to active it in order to safely browser the Internet. However, the payment which you are expected to make does not guarantee that your PC will be protected. Antivirus Security 2013 is not a legitimate security tools.
